Oregon Car DriversMEDFORD, Ore. — AAA officials say Thursday marks the start of the Memorial Day travel holiday, meaning lots of folks out on the roadways.

The sooner you hit the road, the more money you’ll save in gas. AAA officials say gas will probably go up after Friday. Despite that predicted hike, AAA officials say fuel is still cheaper this year than it was this time last year.

In a holiday survey, 89 percent of drivers say they are not planning on letting the price of travel stop them from hitting the road for the holiday.

“I think the encouraging thing to is with the beauty we have in this area, you don’t have to travel far to have a good memorial day; there’s lots of great places around here,” said Matthew Conde, with AAA Oregon/Idaho.

11 percent of drivers in the nation will be on the road this weekend, so AAA officials say you should plan some extra drive time, wherever you decide to go.

Experts predict Friday evening and Monday evening to be the busiest times on the road.
